SANTA CLARA http://www.newyorkgiantsteamonline.com/oshane-ximines-jersey , Calif. (AP) — positions, the San Francisco 49ers felt they met all three objectives with their eight selections in the NFL draft. With high picks in every round each of the first two days, the 49ers obtained prospects that could make a difference on both sides of the ball for a team that won 10 games combined during the first two years general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan have guided the franchise.“You try to improve your team wherever you can,” Shanahan said Saturday. “It’s not the easiest thing. We were in some good draft spots this year where we could draft to add players better than the guys we had.”San Francisco completed two trades Saturday to add two extra picks on the draft’s final day. After trading down in the fourth round, the 49ers addressed a position where they’d sustained their biggest loss during free agency in March. San Francisco then drafted for depth with its fifth-round pick and each of its three selections in the sixth round.WHO THEY GOTThe 49ers acquired one of the draft’s premier prospects in Ohio State defensive lineman Nick Bosa with the No. 2 overall pick, then addressed their lack of playmaking talent at wide receiver by selecting South Carolina’s Deebo Samuel (second round, No. 36 overall) and Baylor’s Jalen Hurd (third, No. 67) with their Day 2 picks.San Francisco’s Day 3 picks were highlighted by the selection of Utah punter Mitch Wishnowsky in the fourth round (No. 110). The 49ers added two sixth-round selections from Cincinnati when trading down from the No. 104 pick, taking Vanderbilt offensive tackle Justin Skule and Virginia cornerback Tim Harris with those picks. The 49ers also added Stanford tight end Kaden Smith with their sixth-round pick (No. 176) and Arkansas linebacker Dre Greenlaw (No. 148) with the fifth-round selection the team received when San Francisco traded linebacker Dekoda Watson and a sixth-round pick to the Denver Broncos.SURPRISE MOVEFor a team needing help to shore up one of the NFL’s weakest defensive backfields, the 49ers instead used their first selection Saturday on a specialist, taking Wishnowsky after trading down with the Bengals to acquire picks.Wishnowsky was the first specialist selected this year, and also is the first punter drafted during the opening four rounds since 2012.He’ll compete with veteran Justin Vogel to replace Bradley Pinion, San Francisco’s fifth-round pick in 2015 who left the team as a free agent in March to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.HOW THEY DIDThe 49ers added a first-round prospect to their defensive line for the fourth time in their past five drafts Julian Love Jersey , with Bosa joining Arik Armstead (2015), DeForest Buckner (2016) and Solomon Thomas (2017) to potentially complete a fearsome front that also added expensive edge rusher Dee Ford in free agency. The 49ers also added a physical dimension the team had been lacking at receiver with Samuel and a red zone threat the team lacks with Hurd, whom Shanahan said also could be a factor at running back and tight end as he develops.Wishnowsky has the tools to become a top-flight punter and each of San Francisco’s other four picks all have the ability to make the team and contribute as rookies, according to Lynch. The biggest need the 49ers failed to address is at safety, where the team started several different combinations of players last season.WHAT’S NEXTAfter trading for Ford, giving him a big contract and then stocking up in the draft and spending big in free agency, the 49ers hope they have now stockpiled enough talent to make a move up the standings in the third year of the Lynch/Shanahan regime. The 49ers continue to build around franchise quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, whom the team is counting on this year to return from an ACL tear that ended his season in Week 3 last year. Running back Jerick McKinnon, one of the team’s top acquisitions in 2018 free agency, also returns after missing all of last season with an ACL tear. The biggest issue looming for the 49ers as they continue to shape their training camp roster is the status of free agent kicker Robbie Gould, whom the team has retained at the franchise tag rate of $4.971 million for kickers.Gould has been unable to come to an agreement with the team on a multiyear contract and reportedly requested a trade earlier this week. CLEVELAND (AP) — John Dorsey’s patience is about to be tested as if never before. After having the No. 1 overall pick in each of the past two NFL drafts, the Browns — and their industrious general manager — will begin this year’s as spectators. They may not stay that way.Dorsey, who has spent the past 16 months overhauling Cleveland’s roster and reawakening “the sleeping giant” as he likes to call the Browns, doesn’t currently have a first-round pick after trading it to the New York Giants in the stunning mega-deal for superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.The No. 17 pick was part of the package in March required to land Beckham http://www.newyorkgiantsteamonline.com/darius-slayton-jersey , whose arrival in Cleveland and pairing with quarterback Baker Mayfield has Browns fans convinced a Super Bowl trip is near.Normally, it would be unnerving for a rebuilding team not to have a first-round pick. Dorsey, though, has lessened the urgency by transforming the Browns from a 0-16 team in 2017 into a 7-8-1 squad last season and potentially the AFC North’s favorite this season. That’s not say this isn’t an important draft as Dorsey, who previously helped rebuild Kansas City into the contender it is today, can plug holes and build depth. And if he feels there’s a player he can’t live without, Dorsey said he’d be willing to move back into the first round.“If I deem it will help the Cleveland Browns, surely I will do that if it helps the organization moving forward, but the compensation on the back end cannot be outrageous,” Dorsey said last week. “It has to work on both sides.”But would he be willing to give up a significant amount?“If a certain player is there that I deem that the value fits the player, yes,” he said.Barring a trade, Cleveland’s first pick won’t be until No. 49 (midway through the second round) and Dorsey has seven others to continue a makeover few expected would yield such positive results this early.Dorsey’s choice of Mayfield last year took many experts by surprise, but it proved to be a savvy selection as the dynamic quarterback set an NFL rookie record with 27 touchdown passes. The key now is adding more quality players to help Mayfield Quinnen Williams Jersey , get the Browns back in the playoffs for the first time since 2002 and maybe to their first Super Bowl.In the meantime, patience will be required. Here are some other things to keep in mind as Dorsey prepares for his second draft as Cleveland’s GM:RUNNING AWAY?Dorsey’s signing of controversial free agent running back Kareem Hunt in February has pushed Duke Johnson closer to the exit door. With Hunt, who is suspended for the first eight games of 2019, and Nick Chubb (996 yards as a rookie in 2018) on the roster, there doesn’t seem to be room for the versatile Johnson. When Hunt was signed, Dorsey was asked if that made Johnson expendable.“I don’t think it makes him expendable yet,” Dorsey said, raising eyebrows. Weeks later, Dorsey called Johnson “a valuable asset.”Johnson, who was the team’s MVP two years ago, didn’t appreciate the comment and failed to report for the start of the offseason workout program. His current relationship with the team is tenuous — at best. Dorsey could try to package Johnson with other picks and move up or just deal him to avoid a future headache.Either way, Johnson’s days in Cleveland seem numbered.AROUND THE CORNERDorsey hopes to add depth at cornerback, a position he addressed with the No. 4 overall pick last year — former Ohio State star Denzel Ward. The Browns attempted to sign a veteran in free agency, but were outbid and now need to find a long-term answer to play alongside Ward http://www.newyorkjetsteamonline.com/jachai-polite-jersey , who had a strong rookie season before missing three of the last four games following a pair of concussions.Among the players who could be available: Auburn’s Jamal Dean, Georgia’s DeAndre Baker and Michigan State’s Justin Layne.UP FRONTOne of Dorsey’s primary offseason goals was improving the defensive line, which he did by acquiring edge rusher Olivier Vernon in the Beckham deal and signing free agent tackle Sheldon Richardson.Vernon and Richardson should help Pro Bowl end — and 2017 top pick— Myles Garrett avoid constant double teams. The Browns have some depth on the D-line, but in today’s pass-and-then-pass-some-more league, teams can never have enough quality linemen.Dorsey said “we all know” that defensive line is the strength of this year’s draft.Ohio State’s Dre’Mont Jones, who grew up in Cleveland, might be a name to watch at No. 49. Another is Mississippi State’s Jeffery Simmons, who recently tore a knee ligament and has had off-field issues. Dorsey, however, has shown a willingness to give players second chances and Simmons fits that mold.LAST TIMECleveland hasn’t entered the draft without a first-round pick since 2008. A year earlier, the Browns traded their ’08 first-round pick along with a second-rounder in ’07 to Dallas in order to move up and select quarterback Brady Quinn at No. 22.
